Gateway Work Experience Programme

Gateway is a programme that offers work experience to Year 12 and 13 Students (with the exception of some work ready Year 11’s) to give them an understanding of what it is required to be successful in a working environment upon leaving school. Students will have an opportunity to work a minimum of 30-40 hours in a workplace environment.

Applicants

We are looking for enthusiastic, work-ready students, who can show responsibility by getting out into the workplace, gaining confidence, project a professional manner, and represent Botany Downs Secondary College with pride.

Gateway has gone from strength to strength over the last six years, and with the help of the Tertiary Education Funding (TEC) our intake is up from 40 students to 83 students per year. Hundreds of our students have gained work experience in Customer Service, Automotive, Hospital and Maternity Care, Early Childhood and Food and Hospitality to name only a few. We will endeavour to find work experience in any field that may be helpful for our students to a pathway out of high school successfully with the right work skills. None of this could be achieved without the excellent support of our local business community, the good standing of our college, the support of our staff and parents, and the ambassadorship of our students.

Selection process

Student applicants will go through a selection process which depends on several things:

  • Individual student timetables
  • Attitude and commitment to the Gateway Programme
  • Be willing to work either April or July school holidays
  • Be work-ready!
  • Completion of appropriate Unit Standards
  • Availability of suitable work experience

Unit Standards

As part of the programme, students are able to achieve suitable Unit Standards. As the Unit Standards are a considerable cost to the programme, there is an expectation that the student will complete and achieve the credits offered to the best of their ability. Each student will have the opportunity to achieve up to 20 credits or more at either Level 2 or 3.

We try to make the best overall matches for our students. We try not to disrupt student timetables if at all possible and will endeavour to make most of our placements during the April and July school holidays.

If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact our Gateway Coordinator.
