This weekend, the SGCNZ UOSWF – Sheilah Winn Festival for Auckland South and East region was a huge success. The students, parents and teachers were treated to performances from Henry VIII, Richard III, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet.
The festival was judged by actors Fern Sutherland and Ryan Carter both alumni of the festival. Fern is currently working on The Brokenwood Mysteries and Ryan has just performed at ASB Waterfront in Red Speedo.
The Results
Outstanding performances of the festival chosen to represent their region at the National festival.
- 5-minute piece Te Wharekura O Mauoa – with King Lear – student directed
- 15-minute Botany Downs Secondary College – with Macbeth – directed by Jacqueline Hood, Head of Learning Area Drama
- Individual NSSP Candidate: Rafe Macdonald, St Kentigern College
What it means for BDSC
This win means that Botany Downs Secondary College cast of Macbeth will be travelling to Wellington to take part in the National Festival for the Queen’s Birthday weekend. This is a huge achievement and the students are extremely excited to be going to Wellington. The performance was described as having an ‘unnerving and unapologetic opening” with the text ‘honoured’ throughout and completely ‘engaging’.
