A Holistic Learning Experience for Year 9 Students

This term from week 6 to Week 8, our Year 9 students embarked on an exciting journey through the Engagement through Āheitanga program that integrated multiple subjects including Maths, English, Social Studies, Science, and Health and Physical Education. A cross-curricular authentic learning experience. A chance for Year 9 students to work in a team and plan a project or solution to a community problem to make a positive change.

Students looked at the world around them, identified a problem, brainstormed a solution to this problem, found some people who could help, and presented their solutions to a group of judges. The ETA focused on developing the āheitanga skills, this encourages a deeper understanding of content and develops critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity. By engaging students in interdisciplinary projects, we aim to make learning more relevant and engaging.

Maths: Students applied mathematical concepts to real-life scenarios, enhancing their understanding of geometry, algebra, and statistics. They worked on projects that required them to analyze data, create models, and solve complex problems.

English: In English classes, students focused on developing their communication skills. They wrote reports, created presentations, and engaged in debates, all centred around the themes explored in their projects.

Social Studies: The program encouraged students to explore contemporary issues. They conducted research, analysed sources, and presented their findings on topics such as environmental sustainability and social justice.

Science: Science lessons were hands-on, and inquiry based. Students conducted experiments, collected data, and used scientific methods to investigate questions related to their projects. This approach helped them understand the scientific principles behind every day phenomena.

Heath and PE: Health and Physical Education was integrated into the program to emphasize the importance of physical health and teamwork. Students participated in activities that promoted fitness, cooperation, and problem-solving through physical challenges.

Overall, the Engagement through āheitanga program has been a resounding success. It has not only enhanced our students’ academic skills but also their ability to work collaboratively and think critically. We are proud of the creativity and dedication our Year 9 students have shown and look forward to seeing how they apply these skills in the future.

Congratulations to the Overall Winner 9S4 and Overall runner up 9B1 for their excellent presentations.

Special thanks to the judges Mrs Holmes, Mrs McGregor, Mr Larsen (BOT rep), Engagement through Āheitanga team and also the teachers of the above-mentioned subjects for your help and support. It is a wonderful Journey.
